Finca Miramar
Its fun! Drinkable! The strawberry comes out far more in the brewing aroma, and not the taste. There is definitely some serious tea-like and citrusy notes that I appreciate. Its also got a very clean mouthfeel that is common to washed processes.
From the Roaster
Angel Ortega is a second-generation coffee farmer from San Agustín, Huila. He began farming in the 1980s with his father and brother before establishing his own farm, Finca Miramar. Despite the challenges of poor soils and seasonal rains, Angel built a reputation for cultivating excellent coffee, originally without chemical inputs.
In 2018, he sold his first micro-lot under his own name after decades of anonymity in blended lots. Now, through Monkaaba and Semilla, Angel is paid some of the highest farmgate prices of his career and maintains direct contact with the roasters who share his coffee with the world.
In recent years, Gesha has gained popularity among San Agustín’s smallholder producers. While the variety is prized for its potential quality, it demands patience and care — taking years to mature and often proving risky for farmers. Angel’s experience has allowed him to cultivate Gesha successfully, with this lot being his third export.
This coffee showcases the elegance of Gesha grown by a smallholder, not a large estate — an important distinction when recognition and fair pricing make all the difference.
From the misty hills of San Agustín, Huila, this washed Gesha from Angel Ortega is a vibrant expression of patience, craft, and dedication. Grown at 1,850 meters on Angel’s Finca Miramar, this lot captures the variety’s signature grace while reflecting the resilience of a smallholder producer perfecting his art. Best enjoyed as a filter, the cup opens with bright notes of strawberry and tangerine, layered with the refined citrusy lift of bergamot. Angel’s meticulous care and natural approach to farming yield a coffee that is delicate yet expressive — a testament to Colombia’s evolving landscape of producer-driven quality and the quiet excellence emerging from Huila’s highlands.
